Baby Shower - Where's the Baby?

Recently I went to a baby shower and took Andrew along with me. It was a wonderful time seeing friends I haven't seen in a while. Andrew got into it and wanted to help the Mommy-to-be open up her gifts. He would take the gift over to her and help her unwrap some of her gifts. The Mommy-to-be took a quick break to cut the cake and it was at that point where I went up to the Daddy-to-be (with Andrew in my arms) and gave him a hug as I said to him,"Congratulations, Daddy". Andrew heard what I said and immediately Andrew said, "He's not your Daddy". I then replied to Andrew, "I know he's not my Daddy, but he's the baby's Daddy". Since Andrew knew he was the only child at the party he replied,"What Baby"? So I touched the Mommy-to-be's tummy and said, "The baby that is inside his Mama's tummy". Well, I opened a can of worms telling him that. You should have seen the perplexed look on Andrew's face as he looked at the Mommy-to-be's tummy. He then asked, "Why don't the baby come out"? So we then explained to him that the baby still has to grow and get bigger before he comes out.

When it came time for the Mommy-to-be to finish opening her gifts Andrew jumped in again to help. At one point the Mommy-to-be stood up to take a stretch and I knew exactly what Andrew was going to do next. He looked up at her big belly and gently took the bottom of her maternity shirt and looked up it and said in wonder, "Where's the Baby?" He was so cute about it that it made every laugh.

Well since that day of the shower, Andrew has asked me many questions that I wasn't ready to answer yet. Questions like, "Did I grow in your belly Mama?", "How did the baby get in the mommy's belly", "Why don't he come out now?" and many others. The one question that he's been asking the most was "Did I grow in your belly?" I didn't want to confuse him even more and didn't know how to answer honestly so he would be able to understand at the young age of 3 years old. So when he first started asking I wouldn't know how to answer so I didn't and changed the subject. This way it bought me some time to figure out how to answer his question in a way he could understand. So when the question was asked again, I just simply told him that he grew in another ladies tummy. From then on little by little I've been telling him of his adoption story and how we became a family.

It was so precious to see the look on his face when I told him that God had a special baby boy named Andrew in Ukraine to be our son. So Daddy and I got on an airplane and flew to Ukraine and met Miss Alla (our translator in Ukraine). Miss Alla then took us on a long train ride to come and visit you. Andrew was thoroughly enjoying the story especially when I told him of when I first held him. I told him that he was a little scared since he didn't know me so I was trying to calm Andrew down and I started singing to Andrew, "You are my sunshine". He immediately smiled and recognized the song(since I sing it to him often) and started singing it with me as we danced around the kitchen. Andrew received it well and still asks and talks about how we became a family.
